once it started to break, the guy on with the sledge hammer took off running in the opposite direction, and we pulled it over right into its own grave. we then knocked out the bottom staves with a sledge hammer while keeping a good bit of tension on the chain. then we hooked about 100 feet of chain together and hooked it about 55 feet up around 2 of the bands on a 70 foot silo. We first dug a huge hole with a crawler loader. I torched the bands off where I first shot at it also. I am sure there are cheaper and safer methods. I alway thought it would have been fun to have a 50 cal. I only had the one to get rid of one and it was in the middle of a open field. it was all piled up in a about 20 ft diameter pile, had it cleaned up in a hour. Finally shot some more holes higher up and very carefully knocked it over with the wheel loader. shot most of the staves out about 10 ft up and the top fell down on the bottom part still standing but leaning a little. Probably a lot safer way than i'm thinking too! But sure sounds fun. 338 and I would think as long as your shooting them out on the bottom you should be ok. But stand back far enough, and shoot them with a. I don't know if that will work or the best idea either. Talked about getting some friends together, and trying to shoot out enough staves. We are talking about taking some down at the farm. A real good operator will make it a very safe, smooth ordeal. Is it concrete or steel? I've watched a friend of mine take down a concrete one. I need to go back to the site, but I think they are block staves. Ilauction has got it figured out archie go with his way Mine are both next to a shed I want to save. What did you knock them in with? Push in with machine or use a sledge hammer? It has worked three times for me however I had plenty of clearance. The way I've done it was to knock every other block in direction I want it to fall about three fourths around silo then put cable or long chain threw blocks and pull. I'm afraid of those 2 options because I don't want the chain to break and I also don't want the watermelon cut to fall before we start pushing. I watched another video where they took out a few on one side (like a melon cut for a tree ) and then pushed it from the other side. They attached chains in the middle and by some kind of magic it took out the middle and the top half fell on the bottom half. I watched a few videos on youtube and one of them was very interesting. Have seen a few videos of them taken down but looked a little dangerous. I have one 80 foot and one 75 to come down. I would like to know the answer to that question also. We have an excavator, but I'm a little concerned regardless. Posted 21:37 (#3731242) Subject: silo demolitionÄoes anyone have any suggestions on the best way to knock down a silo?
