The environments are reasonably varied while sticking firmly to the medieval setting schtick. The visual aesthetic of DeathSpank combines a basic 3D world and characters with mostly 2D set dressing, creating a style reminiscent of a staged play, albeit a rather cartoon-ish one. Bizarre yet useful, and quintessentially Ron Gilbert. By the way, the outhouses are also used as teleportation by means DeathSpank is not willing to explain. One could argue this system makes the game too easy, but I feel it’s a welcome feature that helps the combat not get in the way of the comedy, which is the game’s real draw in the first place. This is more than your average checkpoint system, with enemies you’ve already killed in the immediate vicinity staying dead. That’s DeathSpank’s Thong of Justice, a magical article of clothing that allows him to respawn at the nearest outhouse upon death. You may have noticed the purple thong in the title logo, and no, it’s not just for show. Rain Electric Justice on your foes! Those monks never should have messed with a hero like DeathSpank. Equipment you no longer require can be “ground” for cash on the inventory screen (using the item grinder which looks like a meat grinder), which will be necessary if only because your carrying space is limited. As you gain levels, the food you receive from barrels automatically upgrades to the best you can eat. Food takes eight seconds to eat (and can be interrupted by attacks), but you can carry MUCH more of it (I never reached a carrying cap on any one type of food).Įvery kind of item in the game has a required minimum level to equip it, food and potions included. Potions work instantly, but can be carried in small numbers (up to five of each type). You have two options for healing: potions and food. Some treasure chests around the world require gold keys to open, but the supply of keys tends to be somewhat limited and it gets to be a hassle trying to remember where the chests were by the time you have the means to open them. You also earn money that can be used at stores, but that’s mostly not necessary due to the frequent equipment drops from defeated foes. There are also a few crossbows in the game that are very useful for ranged attacks, but they don’t keep up with power levels as you progress very well.Īs you explore the world, you’ll find much of your equipment in treasure chests, breakable barrels, or enemies littered around the countryside. The most important combination to remember is that Nature beats Undead enemies. Some weapons have elements attached to them, but it’s often hard to tell which element works best on which enemies. These include chaining electricity, a spinning sword attack, and more, and they really provide a strategic edge. As you deal damage, your Justice meter fills, allowing you to perform a Justice attack with selected Weapons of Justice. You can equip multiple weapons to face buttons and D-pad directions (though items use the same slots, so weapons on buttons and items on D-pad is recommended) and gain multiplier bonuses by alternating between them instead of just hacking away with a single killing tool. The battle system in DeathSpank is odd, but easy to learn and functional. Genetic experiments gone wrong always make for.interesting foes. There are main story quests and side-quests alike (though many more of the latter), each of which earn you EXP and specific items upon completion. The vast majority are simple fetch quests, which suits the game well enough but may become too repetitive for some players. This introduces the core Quest system of the game. It seems she was paid to lock it up behind an enchanted barrier, but she has no problem taking the barrier back down if you collect the ingredients she needs for the spell. Our hero DeathSpank has spent much of his life in pursuit of an artifact known only as “The Artifact.” We join the adventurer as he climbs a mountain to inquire about The Artifact to a demon witch. Although the gameplay differs from his previous norm, his eccentric brand of humor remains well in tact. It is the brainchild of Ron Gilbert, famed (in certain circles, anyway) creator of games such as The Secret of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion. At least, I guess it must if you’re actually reading this.ĭeathSpank is an action-RPG with minor point-and-click adventure-style elements. It grabs your attention and makes you curious. What’s in a name…roses supposedly smell nice and all of that, so does it matter? I suggest it may depend on how bizarre the name is, and I think we can all agree that DeathSpank certainly qualifies on the high end of that scale.
